We were commissioned by Glyndebourne’s education department to design an interactive introduction to opera for young people to explore at home or school. The website, named Opera Land, was to be aimed at primary school children. It needed to get across some of the characteristics of the Glyndebourne experience as well as introducing some of the main themes and techniques of the art form via a selection of classic operas. We worked with an extended team at the Glyndebourne education department to create a fun website that allowed children to play as well as learn. For the home page we tapped into the eclecticism of opera by collaging illustrations and photographs together to create an animated, stylised version of Glyndebourne itself, as if a set for an opera taking place on the Glyndebourne stage. Click throughs take users to different mini sites that explore a few operas in detail, making use of animation, audio and video to bring the stories and performances to life. ‘Shadric Toop has made an indispensable contribution to our digital team over the last six years. He has an amazing energy and ability to guide us through not just the design process, but all aspects of the Art Direction. The Education Department at Glyndebourne has learnt to rely on his excellent advice on both technical matters and in helping to vision what might be possible. Shadric has always helped to deliver excellent value for money within the project as a whole and consistently produces work on time despite occasional tight deadlines.’ James Hancox
