Science Wall Graphics – Science Stairwells – Denbigh High School

The Brief

Our brief was to design science wall graphics to cover the main walls in two stairwells that lead to the science department at Denbigh High School, Luton.

Science Wall Graphics – The Project Outcome

The DNA Stairwell

In the first stairwell, we created an educational wall graphic on the theme of genes and DNA. The graphic takes you on a visual journey at the scale of chemistry and biology.

It starts with the humble atom. Next, the graphic leads you through nucleotides, DNA, genes, histones, supercoils, chromosomes, cells, and neurons, ending with the human brain.

The Solar System Stairwell

The second stairwell is themed on the solar system. This time the journey is at the scale of astrophysics.

The graphic starts at the foot of the stairs with an illustration of the sun. Leading up the stairs are all the planets and largest moons in our solar system to the same scale. It is mind-blowing to compare the size of our earth to the size of a solar flare. The scale of this wall graphic is large enough to show this.

At one point the graphic delves into detail about gravity and why planets orbit stars. Further up, it explores the scale of the solar system in relation to our Milky Way galaxy. Finally, the graphic takes a look at black holes and the multiverse theory.

As with all our educational wall designs, we aim to present engaging information to inspire students to go on to discover more about the subject.

The sheer scale of wall graphics allows us to present scientific ideas such as scale in a more engaging way than in books or on screens.
