Our brief was to design science wall graphics to cover the main walls in two stairwells that lead to the science department at Denbigh High School, Luton. In the first stairwell we created an educational wall graphic that takes you on a visual journey at the scale of chemistry and biology. It starts with the humble atom. Next, the graphic leads you through nucleotides, dna, genes, histones, supercoils, chromosomes, cells, neurons, and ends with the human brain. In the second stairwell we take you on a different journey at the scale of astrophysics. The graphic starts at the foot of the stairs with an illustration of the sun. Leading up the stairs are all the planets and largest moons in our solar system to the same scale. It is mind-blowing to compare the size of our earth to the size of a sun flare – a wall graphic is large enough to show this. At one point the graphic delves into detail about gravity and why planets orbit stars. Further up, it explores the scale of the solar system in relation to our Milky Way galaxy and the size of the entire visible universe. Finally, the graphic takes a look at black holes and the multiverse theory. As with all our educational wall designs, we aim to present engaging information to inspire students to go on to discover more about the subject.
