Ring Cycle Illustrations for Grange Park Opera
In 2025, Grange Park Opera commissioned Shadric Toop to create a series of illustrations for Wagner’s Ring Cycle.
The project spans five seasons, from 2026 to 2030, and supports one of the opera company’s most ambitious productions to date. The artwork appears on programme covers, promotional materials and products sold through the Grange Park Opera shop.
This commission builds on an ongoing creative relationship. Since 2019, Toop has produced annual programme cover illustrations for Grange Park Opera.
The Brief
The aim was to create a set of illustrations that could work both as individual programme covers and as a connected series.
Each image responds to a different opera within the Ring Cycle while contributing to a larger visual narrative. The illustrations combine elements of plot, character and setting, using symbolism rather than literal scenes from the productions.
The Grange Park Opera House also plays a central role throughout the series.
Das Rheingold Illustration
The first illustration was created for *Das Rheingold*, the opening opera in Wagner’s Ring Cycle.
The image presents a landscape populated by animals that stand in for key characters from the story. As with previous Grange Park Opera covers, no people appear in the artwork.
The opera house represents Valhalla. It sits among mountains and forests and glows at the centre of the composition.
At the foot of the image, within the caves of Nibelheim, a stag represents Wotan, a fox represents Loge and a serpent represents Alberich.
Elsewhere in the landscape, two bears represent the giants Fasolt and Fafner. Freia appears as a deer hidden among the trees, while the Rhine Maidens appear as otters in the river below. A swan on the water references King Ludwig II of Bavaria.

Wagner’s Ring Cycle is rich in symbolism and mythology. Rather than illustrating a single moment from the opera, this artwork brings together a number of themes and characters within one image.
The result is a detailed scene that rewards closer inspection. Viewers can discover visual references throughout the landscape, from major characters to smaller historical details.

A Five-Year Illustration Project
Das Rheingold marks the beginning of a five-year sequence of Ring Cycle illustrations.
Future artworks will respond to the remaining operas in the cycle while developing the visual world established by the first image.
Together, the series will form a substantial body of work created exclusively for Grange Park Opera between 2026 and 2030.
