Hotel Branding – Granville Hotel Brighton – Brand Identity

The Brief

The Granville was a boutique hotel in Brighton opposite the historic West Pier with a restaurant in the basement. The brief was to redesign the hotel branding, including the logo and colour palette.

When designing the visual identity, we were asked to consider the hotel’s USPs: the hotel’s convenient central location on Brighton Seafront and the fact that each room is individually themed (including Regency, Gothic and Japanese themes). The hotel’s location was a major draw for tourists and conference delegates, as it was just a 3-minute walk from the Brighton Centre and a 15-minute walk from the Brighton Dome events venue.

Hotel Branding – Granville Hotel Logo – Brighton

We based the design on the façade of the building, hinting at the themed rooms through the use of different colours in the windows. The logo mark was designed to be used in the context of an extended facade illustration of Brighton Seafront. Inside the brochure and on the website we annotated this facade illustration to show out-of-town customers more about the location and the attractions of the area.

Dadu Restaurant

The owners of the Granville also requested an identity for their Asian-influenced basement restaurant and cocktail bar, Dadu. The design for the Dadu logo was based on a sun rising in the east (hinting at eastern cuisine). The look was designed to be different from the hotel branding, as the two businesses were to be kept separate.

In 2013, a new restaurant replaced Dadu called Smokeys (with an identity also designed by Toop Studio – see the Smokeys branding project here). Smokeys served American brunches and Texan BBQs.

In 2020 both the Granville Hotel and Smokeys Restaurant closed (perhaps as a result of the pandemic).
